Bezzecchi Breaks Silence After Aragon Sprint Defeat: “The Others Were Faster”
Marco Bezzecchi admits he is not convinced that losing the lead at the opening corner was the decisive reason behind his defeat in the MotoGP Aragon Grand Prix Sprint.
The Aprilia rider started from pole after producing a sensational qualifying performance that saw him beat pre-event favourite Marc Marquez and set a new circuit record.
However, Bezzecchi could not convert pole into victory. Marc Marquez took the lead at Turn 1, with Alex Marquez also moving ahead shortly afterwards. Bezzecchi eventually finished third, unable to match the pace of the two Ducati riders.
Bezzecchi Questions Whether the Start Cost Him Victory
Bezzecchi made an excellent launch from pole and initially retained first position.
His advantage disappeared when Marc Marquez made a decisive braking move into Turn 1. Alex Marquez then took advantage of the battle to move past Bezzecchi at the following corner.
Despite losing the lead so early, Bezzecchi does not believe the outcome can be explained entirely by that opening exchange.
The Italian acknowledged that staying ahead would have improved his chances, but he also felt that the Ducati riders simply had more pace during the Sprint.
“The lead could have helped. I don't know if it's the only reason, because I finished third.”
Bezzecchi also admitted that he needed to execute the first corner better, although he remained satisfied with his overall performance.
Marc and Alex Marquez Had the Advantage
Once the Marquez brothers moved ahead, Bezzecchi struggled to stay with them.
Even with the soft rear tyre providing strong performance during its optimal phase, the Aprilia rider could not mount a serious challenge for either of the top two positions.
According to Bezzecchi, his race pace simply was not enough to match the two Ducatis.
“What I know is that my pace was like this today. So maybe if I was leading…but my pace anyway was like this. I think the others were a little bit faster.”
That assessment meant Bezzecchi viewed his third-place finish as more than just the result of losing position at the start.
Bezzecchi Defends Aprilia's Soft-Tyre Choice
Tyre strategy was another important factor in the Aragon Sprint.
Bezzecchi and Aprilia team-mate Jorge Martin were the only front-running riders to select the soft rear tyre, while most of the field opted for the more durable medium compound.
After finishing third, Bezzecchi rejected the idea that Aprilia had necessarily made the wrong tyre decision.
The Aprilia rider explained that he had worked successfully with the soft tyre throughout the day and felt comfortable using it.
“I Felt Good With the Soft”
Bezzecchi said it was easy to argue after the race that the medium tyre had been the better option, but that was not how he felt before or during the event.
His confidence in the soft compound remained strong because of the performance it had delivered during the earlier sessions.
He even suggested that switching to the medium tyre might not have produced a better result.
“I'm not sure that with the medium I could do much better. Honestly, I'm more convinced that I could do worse.”
For Bezzecchi, the tyre selection was therefore not the main explanation for his inability to challenge the Marquez brothers.
A Strong Saturday Despite Missing Out on Victory
Although the Sprint ended without a win, Bezzecchi still had plenty of positives to take from Saturday.
His pole position had already demonstrated the competitiveness of the Aprilia RS-GP at MotorLand Aragon, while third place allowed him to gain ground on Jorge Martin in the championship battle.
Bezzecchi was also carrying an injury to his left knee, adding another challenge to his weekend.
Despite those circumstances, he remained pleased with his performance.
“To stay close to the Marquez brothers in Aragon, it's good.”
The result was especially encouraging because Aprilia had not been expected to have an advantage over Ducati at a circuit where Marc Marquez has traditionally been extremely strong.
Bezzecchi Still Targets a Strong Aragon GP Result
The Sprint may have ended with Bezzecchi behind both Marquez brothers, but the Italian believes there is still room to improve before the main Grand Prix.
After a weekend in which he had already topped practice and qualifying, Bezzecchi saw the Sprint as another opportunity to understand where Aprilia could make progress.
He believes another step forward could bring him closer to the Ducatis in the longer race.
Aprilia Still Searching for Its First Aragon Win
Aprilia has yet to win at Aragon, while Marc Marquez has enjoyed considerable success at the circuit.
That history makes Bezzecchi's pole position particularly significant, even though he could not turn it into a Sprint victory.
With the main Grand Prix still ahead, the Aprilia rider remains focused on improving the bike and closing the gap.
“We still have one more day, so maybe I can get closer. We have to try to make a step.”
What Bezzecchi's Aragon Sprint Result Really Means
Bezzecchi's third-place finish was his first major setback of the Aragon weekend after dominating practice and qualifying.
However, the result did not appear to shake his confidence.
The Italian believes the opening corner could have given him a better opportunity, but he also recognised that Marc and Alex Marquez had superior pace once they moved ahead.
That makes the Sprint result less about a single mistake and more about the performance gap between Aprilia and Ducati over race distance.
With the main Aragon GP still to come, Bezzecchi now has another chance to turn his strong qualifying form into a race victory.
