Marco Bezzecchi Stuns the Marquez Brothers With Record-Breaking Aragon MotoGP Lap

Marco Bezzecchi delivered a stunning performance in MotoGP Practice at Aragon, taking Aprilia to the top with a new MotorLand lap record despite still recovering from his Sachsenring injuries.

The factory Aprilia rider produced a late surge to beat Ducati's Marc Marquez and Gresini Ducati's Alex Marquez on the opening day of action at the Aragon Grand Prix.

Bezzecchi's decisive lap came with only two minutes remaining in the session. His 1m45.455s effort was enough to move him ahead of the Marquez brothers and establish a new all-time track record at MotorLand.

The result was particularly impressive given that Bezzecchi has yet to make a full recovery from injuries sustained at the Sachsenring in July.

Bezzecchi Produces Late Aragon Masterclass

The pace at MotorLand increased rapidly once Practice got underway.

KTM's Pedro Acosta was among the first riders to make a major improvement, breaking into the 1m46s range within the opening 10 minutes. His pace was considerably faster than the best time recorded during first practice, where the benchmark stood at 1m47.532s.

Marc Marquez responded soon afterwards.

The factory Ducati rider posted a 1m46.320s lap, immediately creating a gap of around half a second over the rest of the field.

Even when several riders switched to soft rear tyres, Marquez remained firmly at the front. Bezzecchi was the closest challenger through the middle phase of the session, sitting only 0.039 seconds behind the championship contender.

Aldeguer Temporarily Takes Control

The order changed dramatically during the final 15 minutes.

Returning Gresini Ducati rider Fermin Aldeguer produced a rapid 1m45.909s lap to take the lead away from Marquez.

The factory Ducati rider soon responded, setting a new personal Aragon track record based on his 2025 benchmark and reclaiming the top position.

However, the final time attack was still to come.

Riders returned to the circuit during the final six minutes, setting up a dramatic fight for the top spot.

Bezzecchi Beats Marc Marquez by Just 0.038 Seconds

Marc Marquez appeared to have done enough with a 1m45.493s lap, but Bezzecchi had one final answer.

With only two minutes remaining, the Aprilia rider stopped the clock at 1m45.455s.

That was just enough to put him ahead of Marquez and give Aprilia the top position.

Marquez was unable to respond, leaving Bezzecchi as the fastest rider of the day.

Alex Marquez then moved into second with a 1m45.465s, only 0.010 seconds behind Bezzecchi.

The extremely tight margins highlighted just how competitive the leading group was. The top three riders were separated by only 0.038 seconds.

Alex Marquez Splits the Two Title Contenders

Alex Marquez's late improvement gave Gresini Ducati second place and separated the two leading championship contenders.

His 1m45.465s lap placed him just ahead of his brother Marc, who finished third with a 1m45.493s.

The result means Ducati still occupied two of the top three positions, but Aprilia ultimately claimed the headline result through Bezzecchi.

Behind the leading trio, VR46 Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio was the fastest of the rest.

He finished fourth, almost three tenths away from Bezzecchi, while Aldeguer completed the top five.

Fernandez, Martin and Acosta Follow

Trackhouse Aprilia's Raul Fernandez finished sixth after making a late improvement.

He edged factory Aprilia team-mate Jorge Martin, who ended the session seventh.

Pedro Acosta was eighth for KTM, followed by VR46 Ducati rider Franco Morbidelli in ninth.

Morbidelli's result was enough to secure direct passage into Q2.

Zarco Makes Impressive MotoGP Return

One of the other major stories from the session was Johann Zarco's comeback.

The LCR Honda rider returned to MotoGP action following a three-month absence caused by injury.

Zarco produced a strong final lap to break into the top 10, finishing tenth and becoming the fastest Honda rider in the session.

He was only fractionally ahead of LCR team-mate Diogo Moreira and factory Honda rider Luca Marini.

Moreira finished 11th, while Marini was 12th.

Bagnaia and Quartararo Struggle Outside the Top 10

Francesco Bagnaia endured another difficult Practice session.

The factory Ducati rider failed to make the top 10 for the second consecutive weekend, finishing 13th with a best time of 1m46.487s.

Fabio Quartararo followed immediately behind.

The 2021 MotoGP world champion was the leading Yamaha rider in 14th, recording a 1m46.618s lap.

The result leaves both riders with work to do heading into the remainder of the Aragon weekend.

Jack Miller Suffers the Session's Only Crash

Jack Miller was the only rider to crash during the session.

The Pramac Yamaha rider fell at Turn 2 and ultimately finished 19th.

His final time of 1m47.093s left him more than 1.6 seconds away from Bezzecchi's record-setting benchmark.

Bezzecchi Sends a Warning to the MotoGP Field

Bezzecchi's Aragon performance provides a major boost for Aprilia after the Italian rider managed to beat both Marquez brothers in a fiercely contested final time attack.

The bigger talking point, however, is that Bezzecchi achieved the result while still dealing with the consequences of his Sachsenring injuries.

With the top three separated by less than four hundredths of a second, the Aragon weekend could develop into another extremely close battle at the front.

For now, Bezzecchi has the advantage — and Aprilia has the fastest bike on the opening day.
