Ducati’s Aragon Advantage Revealed: Why Aprilia’s MotoGP Dominance Could Be Challenged

Aprilia has been the stronger force at several recent MotoGP events, but the characteristics of MotorLand Aragon could give Ducati a crucial opportunity to close the gap and fight back.

The balance of power between Ducati and Aprilia could shift once again at the 2026 MotoGP Aragon Grand Prix.

After Aprilia enjoyed a highly successful weekend at Silverstone, Ducati arrives at MotorLand Aragon with renewed confidence. The Spanish circuit has several characteristics that could work in Ducati’s favour, particularly its high-grip surface and anti-clockwise layout.

Ducati riders Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Di Giannantonio both believe the Italian manufacturer could be much closer to Aprilia at Aragon than it was during recent races.

For Ducati, that makes the upcoming weekend an important opportunity to challenge Aprilia’s recent momentum.

Why Aragon Could Change the Ducati-Aprilia Battle

Aprilia has demonstrated impressive performance at circuits where grip levels are relatively low. However, MotorLand Aragon is very different.

The Spanish circuit is known for offering one of the highest levels of grip on the MotoGP calendar. According to Di Giannantonio, that could reduce one of Aprilia’s recent advantages and give Ducati a better chance of competing at the front.

The VR46 Ducati rider believes the circumstances at Aragon could create a much closer battle between the two Italian manufacturers.

Rather than simply relying on predictions based on previous races, however, Di Giannantonio stressed that Ducati must concentrate on improving its overall package.

That means finding the right combination between the motorcycle and the rider while addressing the weaknesses that affected the team during the previous Grands Prix.

Francesco Bagnaia Sees More Potential for Ducati

Francesco Bagnaia is also optimistic about Ducati’s chances at MotorLand Aragon.

The factory Ducati rider believes the circuit could suit the Desmosedici better than some of the venues visited earlier in the season.

One of the reasons is the level of grip available at the circuit. Bagnaia also compared the layout to Brno, another track where he feels comfortable.

The anti-clockwise nature of Aragon is another interesting factor for Bagnaia.

He described it as the only left-handed circuit where he feels particularly comfortable, giving him additional confidence that Ducati can be competitive.

The expectation inside the Ducati camp is therefore that the manufacturer could have greater potential at Aragon than it showed at Silverstone.

Ducati Needs a Response After Silverstone

The timing of the Aragon Grand Prix is particularly significant for Ducati.

Aprilia dominated the previous event at Silverstone, reinforcing its position as one of the strongest manufacturers in the 2026 championship.

Ducati, meanwhile, needs to find a way to respond.

The championship battle between the two Italian manufacturers has already shifted several times this season. Aprilia has recorded seven victories, while Ducati has taken five wins.

However, Ducati has shown signs of returning to competitive form during the most recent stretch of the championship.

Over the last seven race weekends, Ducati has won four times, while Aprilia has taken victory in the other three.

That record demonstrates how closely the two manufacturers have been competing despite Aprilia's strong overall momentum.

Fabio Di Giannantonio Wants Ducati to Close the Gap

Di Giannantonio is particularly hopeful that the characteristics of Aragon will allow Ducati to reduce the performance deficit to Aprilia.

He believes Aprilia's strong performance on lower-grip circuits may not translate in the same way at MotorLand.

With Aragon offering significantly more grip, Ducati could potentially find itself in a much stronger position.

The VR46 rider has also made it clear that Ducati cannot afford to focus solely on what should happen based on circuit characteristics.

Instead, the team must work on the areas that have limited its performance in recent races.

That includes finding improvements in the overall rider-and-bike package.

Ducati Could Experiment More at Aragon

Di Giannantonio also sees the current stage of the championship as an opportunity for Ducati to take a more aggressive approach.

If the Desmosedici proves to be closer to the Aprilias than expected, he wants to use that opportunity to push harder and explore different solutions with the motorcycle.

The goal is not simply to confirm that Ducati is competitive on paper.

It is to turn that potential into genuine performance on the track.

That could mean trying solutions that Ducati has not previously used and searching for additional gains during the weekend.

Marc Marquez Adds Another Ducati Threat

Ducati also has another major advantage heading into Aragon: Marc Marquez.

The reigning MotoGP champion was already considered one of the favourites for the weekend because of his exceptional record at the Spanish circuit.

His experience and previous success at MotorLand make him a particularly important rider to watch as Ducati attempts to challenge Aprilia.

While Bagnaia and Di Giannantonio are optimistic about Ducati’s potential, Marquez provides another significant reason for the manufacturer to believe it can fight near the front.

The combination of a circuit that may suit the Desmosedici and Marquez’s strong history at Aragon could make Ducati a serious threat.

Aprilia Still Cannot Be Written Off

Despite Ducati’s optimism, Aprilia remains a major force.

The manufacturer has already demonstrated that it can dominate MotoGP weekends, most recently at Silverstone.

Its seven victories this season underline how competitive the RS-GP has been throughout 2026.

Ducati therefore cannot assume that the higher grip level at Aragon will automatically reverse the performance order.

Instead, the circuit characteristics simply provide Ducati with a potentially better opportunity to close the gap.

The actual performance difference will only become clear once the riders begin running on track.

Aragon Could Deliver a Major Ducati-Aprilia Battle

The Aragon Grand Prix could therefore become an important test of the balance between Ducati and Aprilia.

Silverstone highlighted Aprilia’s strength, but MotorLand presents a very different challenge.

The high-grip surface, anti-clockwise layout and circuit characteristics have given Ducati riders reasons to believe that the Desmosedici can perform better.

Bagnaia expects Ducati to have greater potential, while Di Giannantonio hopes the gap to Aprilia will be smaller and wants to use the opportunity to explore new solutions.

With Marquez also entering the weekend as a proven Aragon specialist, Ducati has several reasons to be confident.

But the real question remains: will Aragon finally give Ducati the opportunity to turn its potential into a serious challenge to Aprilia?
