Marc Marquez Reveals the Risky Turn 1 Move That Beat Bezzecchi in Aragon MotoGP Sprint

Marc Marquez has revealed that his decisive move on Marco Bezzecchi at Turn 1 was part of a deliberate plan after he realised the Aprilia rider's soft rear tyre could give him an advantage in the opening laps of the Aragon MotoGP Sprint.

The reigning MotoGP champion produced a perfectly timed attack at the opening corner of Saturday's sprint at MotorLand Aragon, overtaking polesitter Marco Bezzecchi under braking and taking control of the race.

The move proved crucial.

Marquez eventually crossed the finish line first, while his younger brother Alex Marquez completed a Ducati 1-2. Bezzecchi, who had started from pole after dominating qualifying, had to settle for third.

For Marc, however, the key moment came almost immediately after the lights went out.

Marc Marquez Planned His Turn 1 Attack on Bezzecchi

Marquez admitted after the race that his move on Bezzecchi was not an impulsive decision.

He had already identified Turn 1 as his best opportunity to take the lead before the sprint even started.

The reason was closely connected to tyre strategy.

Bezzecchi had opted for a soft rear tyre, while the Ducati riders had chosen the medium option. Marquez believed the Aprilia rider could use the softer rubber to build an advantage during the early stages if he was allowed to remain at the front.

That meant Marquez needed to act immediately.

The factory Ducati rider started second on the grid and waited for the braking zone at the opening corner before making his move.

Why Turn 1 Was So Important

Marquez knew he had to prevent Bezzecchi from controlling the opening lap.

Rather than waiting for another opportunity later in the sprint, he chose to attack at the first corner, where he felt particularly strong under braking.

The move allowed him to take the lead while Alex Marquez also found a way past Bezzecchi.

That gave the two Marquez brothers valuable breathing room at the front of the race.

Once Marc had established himself in first place, he concentrated on maintaining a controlled pace and building a gap.

The Tyre Gamble Behind Marquez's Strategy

Tyre selection played an important role in the outcome of the sprint.

Marquez and the other Ducati riders used the medium rear tyre because they did not consider the soft option suitable for the race.

Bezzecchi, meanwhile, chose the softer rear compound.

The Italian's choice meant he could potentially be particularly strong during the early laps.

Marquez therefore understood that allowing Bezzecchi to escape at the beginning could make the race much harder to control.

The Ducati rider's solution was straightforward: attack immediately.

His Turn 1 manoeuvre ultimately changed the entire complexion of the sprint.

Marquez Admits the Move Was Risky

Although the strategy worked perfectly, Marquez acknowledged that his Turn 1 attack involved considerable risk.

The Spaniard had to brake extremely late to get ahead of Bezzecchi.

A mistake could have seen him run wide and lose the advantage.

However, Marquez felt the circumstances allowed him to take that risk.

Starting near the front meant there was enough space around him to attempt a late-braking manoeuvre without the same dangers he would face in the middle of a crowded pack.

The runoff area at the corner also provided some margin for error.

Why Marquez Was Willing to Take the Risk

Marquez explained that the situation was different because he had only one rider directly ahead of him.

When a rider in front begins braking, the rider behind can delay braking slightly and attempt to make the pass.

For Marquez, the potential reward outweighed the risk because he believed Turn 1 was effectively his best opportunity to win the sprint.

Once he had taken the lead, the race became much more manageable.

The Plan Worked as Ducati Secured a 1-2

Marquez's opening-lap strategy eventually delivered exactly what Ducati wanted.

He controlled the sprint from the front and secured another important victory at MotorLand Aragon.

Alex Marquez finished second, completing a Ducati 1-2.

Bezzecchi, despite starting from pole and showing excellent pace throughout Friday practice and qualifying, finished third.

The result represented an important turnaround for Marquez after Bezzecchi had looked particularly strong earlier in the weekend.

Marquez Now Targets Another Aragon Victory

With the sprint victory secured, Marquez's attention turned toward Sunday's full-length Aragon Grand Prix.

MotorLand is one of the circuits where the Spaniard has historically been particularly strong, alongside Austin and the Sachsenring.

The sprint result also moved Marquez back into third place in the championship standings.

Another strong result on Sunday could further reduce the gap to the Aprilia riders Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi.

The opportunity was therefore significant for the reigning champion.

Could Marquez Repeat the Turn 1 Move on Sunday?

Marquez was also asked whether he would consider making another aggressive move on Bezzecchi at Turn 1 during Sunday's Grand Prix.

His answer was less definitive.

He suggested that everything would depend on the start and how Bezzecchi approached the first corner.

The Italian could change his defensive strategy after what happened in the sprint.

Nevertheless, Marquez remains confident at Turn 1 and believes the opening corner could once again play an important role.

He plans to assess the situation during the race before deciding whether another attack is possible.

Marc Marquez Sends a Warning to Bezzecchi

The Aragon sprint demonstrated just how important strategy can be in MotoGP.

Bezzecchi had the advantage of pole position and had shown impressive pace throughout the weekend, but Marquez used his starting position, braking strength and tyre strategy to turn the race in his favour.

The decisive Turn 1 attack gave Marquez the lead he needed.

Now, the question is whether Bezzecchi will be able to respond in Sunday's Grand Prix.

Marquez has already shown that he is prepared to take calculated risks when the opportunity presents itself.

And with the championship battle still developing, another strong result at Aragon could prove highly valuable.
